Water crisis pertaining to access to clean and safe drinking water is not unknown. Considering the ever increasing population, current potable water sources are more prone to extinction than meeting the growing demands. The rural communities of India mostly rely on groundwater resources and available water bodies nearby, these sources are not safe to be consumed directly and the traditional methods used are not effective enough. Apart from this the rapid growth of industrialization and the generation of agricultural waste has highly polluted the water bodies with chemicals, heavy metals and other harmful substances. There is a need for an immediate solution to provide clean and safe drinking water - portable filtration devices. There is a rise in research to develop effective and portable filtration devices, currently existing devices in the market have impacted many communities worldwide, providing clean and safe drinking water to the most remote locations of the world and saving lives. In this review we consider five unique bio-based filtering mediums and discuss their characteristics in filtering unclean water
