The objective of this work is using a new bipolar plate instead of graphite which is currently used in the polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC). Aluminum substrate coated with zinc followed by different electroless nickel deposits alloy is used as a new bipolar plate for PEM fuel cell. As-plated Al-substrate with different electroless nickel alloys were subjected to different tests including EDAX, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope, corrosion resistance, thickness, microhardness and electrical conductivity measurements. The properties of different electroless nickel alloys on zincated aluminum substrate elucidated that E(Ni-P) as plated alloys were the most suitable one for requirements as a bipolar plate instead of graphite.
