Novel analytical approach for spectrophotometric determination of bismuth through measurement of permittance of the copper-ethylene diamine tetraacetate absorbing system
S.R.Labhade, V.B.Gaikwad
The absorbance quenching capability of Bi3+ towards the copper(II)- ethylenediaminetetraacetate, [Cu(II)-EDTA]2- absorbing system, was alternatively exercised for measurement systemÂ’s permittance in spectrophotometric determination of bismuth. The validity of this method was tested at 725 nm by measuring the clearance of [Cu(II)-EDTA]2- system, which was subsequently formed in the Bi3+ solution via utilizing surplus EDTA. The linearity of permittance (viz. logarithm of clearance) versus concentration of bismuth was used for determination of bismuth. The effects of some important variables on the determination of bismuth based on proposed method were studied. The average value of systemÂ’s permittance coefficient was observed as 0.1488 lit.g-1cm-1 at pH 1.0 to 1.25 for concentration of bismuth in the range of 0.002 g to 0.080g. The method was successfully applied for determination of bismuth in Trymo tablets. The average accuracy was found good, which was evaluated by comparison of the results obtained with those claimed by the manufacturer.
